Helping Unique Learners Find Academic Success

Our team at Futures Academy understands that each child learns differently and, that it is our job to find a way to teach every student according to their needs and abilities. Your child's success is our ultimate goal and, we believe that our unique methods help children that may not reach their full potential in a traditional classroom setting. Our one-to-one instruction and small group courses are proven to be more conducive to learning for children with ADD, ADHD, or other children who learn uniquely.

Smaller Classes Mean Increased Success

Many kids thrive and flourish in traditional schools with traditional methods of instruction and normal class sizes. However, studies have shown that decreased class size can lead to better learning outcomes and an increase in the quality of education.

The Student Teacher Achievement Ratio (STAR) project was an early study that suggested a decreased class size will increase students' academic success. As part of this study, students and teachers were assigned randomly into either a class with 15 students or a class with 22 students. They then provided instruction and evaluated the results four years later. The data that they collected suggested that after 4 years, the students in the small class received the equivalent of 3 more months of education than the students in the large class.

At Futures Academy we use small class sizes when they are appropriate and when they foster an environment of educational growth. We realize that many children benefit from learning in small groups with other students and, we facilitate that whenever possible.

Some unique learners learn best when they have on-one time with a caring instructor, and we believe that it is crucial to provide students with personalized instruction if that is what they need.

One-to-One Instruction

Benjamin Bloom's landmark 1984 study on the advantages of one-to-one instruction provided data to support that individual attention leads to better learning outcomes. His study showed that 90% of the students who received one-to-one instruction tested in the top 20% of their peers who were in a traditional classroom setting. In the end, Bloom hypothesized that, individualized attention would improve the learning outcome for most students.

At Futures Academy, we have the resources to provide this one-on-one instruction to children who are having trouble learning in a large classroom setting. This individualized attention allows children to learn at their own pace and, it allows the instructors to customize their material and strategies to best fit the student. We believe that every child deserves the chance to learn in an environment that allows them to excel. These 'unique learners' face challenges that we believe we can work together to overcome.

Who Are 'Unique Learners'?

'Unique Learners' is a broad term that describes anyone who learns better through non-traditional instruction. For many of these students, ADD and ADHD are their main challenges to overcome. These diagnoses have broad effects on a child's life and can severely hamper their ability to learn, especially among the many distractions of a modern classroom.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a chronic condition that typically begins in childhood and can persist throughout life. Children with ADHD can present a variety of symptoms that can include:

  • Impulsivity
  • Repetition of words or actions
  • Irritability
  • Hyperactivity

Students with ADHD can be easily distracted and usually require an instructor to redirect their attention to their work when their minds wander.

Many times, when children with ADHD are placed in a large class there are many things to take their attention and, the teacher does not have the time to redirect the student multiple times. Students often perform poorly in these settings and that affects their ability to learn going forward as well as their self-esteem.

One-to-one instruction takes many of the distractions away and, it gives the instructor the ability to focus all of their time and energy into helping the child to learn.
