For parents and students alike, looking ahead to a new school year can be both exciting and a little bit daunting. How can we balance the transitions of a new school year with the importance of self-care and good habits? Start by approaching each new school year with a little joyful intention. Here, we'll discuss some helpful tips to get your new school year off to a great start, and to keep you feeling good all year-round.
Start the School Year Off Right
A new school year brings with it new schedules, new friends, new teachers, and maybe even a new school altogether. This can lead to mixed feelings of uncertainty and excitement all swirled together. At Futures Academy, we want you to feel good about your new learning community, and to feel the transformative power of learning each day.
Find the joy in smaller classes, individualized attention, guided study and a welcoming and supportive atmosphere. When an instructor tailors a teaching method to a student’s unique needs, learning success increases exponentially. While your mind may be on what outfit to wear or who you'll meet in a new school year, take time to savor the small joys like reflecting on how you may have helped someone that day, or what you can do to make a difference in your community.
From day one, you can find your voice, speak your truth, and be your confidence.
Ease Into Your Day
When the alarm goes off, it's tempting to keep snoozing. Try to set a little time before you need to run out the door - to relax, breathe, and enjoy breakfast. Beginning the day by writing in a journal can be a great way to infuse positive attitude into your entire day.
Make sure you eat a balanced breakfast, and remember that we often wake up more dehydrated than we realize. Drinking water in the morning can help you feel more awake, more refreshed, and better able to tackle anything that comes your way during the day.
Packing lunch or digging for lunch money can make the morning a challenge and reduce our ability to relax. Packing a lunch the night before or setting aside lunch money alleviates some of the rush to get things whipped up before the bus arrives.
Set aside time to read something besides school work during the morning, like a favorite book, so you can engage your mind while doing something relaxing.
Good Homework and Study Habits
When homework and tests begin to loom on the horizon, parents and students are well served by a schedule that allows for adequate time management. Discuss upcoming homework and assignments together, in a non-judgmental way, and give adequate quiet time and space to complete homework and project assignments.
Feeling stressed by a mountain of work? Not sure how best to study? Remember to seek out 1:1 tutoring sessions and make use of Guided Study on campus to complete homework while at school.
With so much going on in the busy lives of our students, we want to emphasize happiness. Take brain breaks when you need them, and be kind to yourself when you need to step away from work. These techniques tie in to our Mindshift: The Science of Learning course and will help you build positive focused skills that will last a lifetime.
Before and After School Care
Remember to set a joyful routine that invokes a sense of gratitude and love of learning. In the morning, take time to reflect on your goals for the day and what you'd like to get out of the day - besides schoolwork!
After school, take time to rest and recharge with loved ones and remember that Futures Academy is here to support you in all your academic goals. From optimal learning schedules, one-to-one and small group instruction, along with a bully-free environment, you can care for yourself when you're a part of a community that puts caring first.
