Help Your Child Excel in School

Apr 25, 2019

As a parent, there's nothing more heartbreaking than seeing your child struggle and fail in school. Thankfully, there are plenty of things you can do to help enhance his or her odds of academic success. If you'd like to see your child excel in school this year as never before, try these five tips to help improve their academic performance, their opinion of school, and their ability to learn more effectively.

1. Identify Their Needs

What is it that's holding your child back from success? For some children, it's a specific learning difference that needs to be addressed. For others, it's a problem in the classroom: a specific teacher who doesn't work well with them, a bullying issue, or a distracting environment. Other children may struggle to learn simply because they've missed a step in the process somewhere along the way. If you want to help your child succeed this year, start by figuring out what it is that he or she needs, then find a way to make it happen.

2. Determine Your Child's Learning Preference

How does your child learn best? While some children absorb information like a sponge as they read it, others learn best by hearing the information. Still others prefer a project-based learning style that allows them to actively touch and interact with new materials and concepts. If you want to help your child succeed academically, find the way that he or she learns best and find more ways to encourage him or her to explore learning that way.

3. Make Sure School is a Safe and Trusting Environment

A child can't learn in an environment where they feel threatened. Make sure that school is a safe, trusting environment for your child. If your child is struggling with bullying or other issues, whether teachers or other children are at fault, find the problem and find a way to fix it. In some cases, that may mean moving your child to a different school, like Futures Academy, where bullying and other negative behaviors won't be tolerated.

4. Be Active in Your Child's Education

Get involved in the classroom, if you have the opportunity. Volunteer, interact with the teacher, and send emails. At home, talk with your child about what they're learning and how they're doing in school each day. Make homework a priority. Look for educational opportunities outside of school, from trips to museums or concerts to educational websites your child can explore. The more active you are, the more your child will be driven to succeed.

5. Pursue Tutoring

If your child has been struggling, a tutor can be one of the greatest gifts you can give. The tutor teaches the content until the student masters the subject area and is ready to move on to the next lesson. Provide your child with the opportunity to work one-on-one with a tutor who will help him or her overcome specific obstacles and succeed in school.

Helping your child succeed this year doesn't have to take all of your time and energy. By refocusing and looking for new opportunities for your child, however, you can watch him or her learn, grow, and excel. Tour a Futures Academy Campus today.
